WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF MIDWIVES (CAM)

Dear Midwives,

On behalf of all Canadian midwives, I am delighted to welcome you to attend the 31st ICM Triennial Congress in Toronto, Canada.

Here in Canada, we have much to celebrate! Midwifery has grown rapidly in the past twenty years and we look forward to sharing with you the unique aspects of the Canadian model of midwifery care. However, there is still much work to be done to ensure equal access to midwifery care. In some areas of Canada, midwifery remains unregulated and unrecognized as a profession. Many women living in remote regions are evacuated from their communities to give birth in urban centers. Indigenous families still have the poorest health outcomes for mothers and newborns. Together with our sister organization, the National Aboriginal Council of Midwives, we are working hard to ensure that these issues are addressed.

Your presence at the ICM Congress in Toronto 2017 will bring much needed visibility to these and other inequities that still exist in Canada, throughout the Americas and around the world.

I look forward to seeing you to Toronto in 2017!

Emmanuelle Hebert
President, Canadian Association of Midwives
